Piglet survival - Implications of large litter sizes: Genetic Focus on What is Happening as Litter Sizes Increase to Levels That Create Challenges to Survival

چکیده

Introduction As an industry, our success in selecting for increased litter size is coming back to haunt us. Data from breeders’ herds in Ontario and reports from elsewhere show that there is a non-linear relationship between litter size and piglet survival, especially peri-natal survival (e.g. Robinson and Quinton, 2002, Lecour. 2000). Data from Robinson and Quinton (2002) reproduced below as Figure 1 suggest that if we continue to increase litter size without worrying about survival, we can expect a corresponding and more rapid increase in piglet mortality in the peri-partum period at least.

Economic weights for sow productivity traits in nucleus pig populations

Economic values or weights measure the net economic gain per unit genetic increase of a given trait. These were derived for sow productivity traits for use as weighting factors in a dam line selection index used by purebred or nucleus dam line breeders. The profit function approach was used in order to provide flexibility to alternative production systems, market requirements or population trai...

Impact of litter size on sow stayability in Swedish commercial piglet producing herds

BACKGROUND Sows' ability to produce an excessive amount of piglets has shaped modern piglet production and there has been a steady increase in litter size during the last decades. This development has caused some negative side-effects, such as an increase in the proportion of stillborn piglets, a decrease in the proportion of weaned piglets and a larger variation in quality of piglets. Swedish ...

Selection for litter size at day five to improve litter size at weaning and piglet survival rate.

Selection for total number of piglets born (TNB) since 1992 has led to a significant increase in this trait in Danish Landrace and Danish Yorkshire but has also been accompanied by an increase in piglet mortality. The objective of this study was to estimate the genetic and phenotypic parameters for litter size and survival to find alternative selection criteria to improve litter size at weaning...

Genetic Aspects of Maternal Ability in Sows

Grandinson, K. 2003. Genetic aspects of maternal ability in sows. Doctoral dissertation. ISSN 1401-6249, ISBN 91-576-6440-4 The purpose of this thesis was to gain knowledge about the genetic background of different aspects of maternal ability in sows. Today’s selection for increased litter size at birth will put higher demands on the sow’s ability to take care of her litter, and may cause probl...

Estimation of Genetic Parameters for Survival and Birth Weight in Moghani Sheep

Genetic parameters for birth weight and survival traits were estimated using data collected from 1995 to 2009 in Jafarabad Moghani Sheep Breeding Station. Number of observation for survival and birth weight were 7202 and 6585, respectively. Genetic parameters were estimated using restricted maximum likelihood (REML) procedure under 16 different models, including animal, threshold and sire mod...
